  • High voltage fast activity in the region of skull defect
    • The skull is a high frequency and high voltage filter
  • Mostly in beta range (beta rhythm)
  • Spiky and sharp appearance
  • Occurs only over skull defects
    • Abruptly diminish beyond the margins of the defect
  • Better identified with bipolar montage
  • Clinical significance: sign of bone abnormality, not an EEG abnormality
  • Presence of abnormal slowing or low amplitude within the breach effect’s region may indicate cerebral pathology
  • In rare cases skull metastasis can also cause breach rhythm
