  • Presence of >20% Delta waves
  • Also known as Delta sleep or slow wave sleep (SWS)
  • Sometimes a distinction is made between Non-REM 3 (20-50% delta waves) and Non-REM 4 (>50% delta waves)
  • K complex and sleep spindles could persist in Non-REM 3, however not prominent
  • Time in non-REM 3 sleep decreases with the age:
    • Age 20-30: 21% of total sleep
    • Age 40-50: 8% of total sleep
    • Age 60-70: 2% of total sleep
